John's Travel Update April 22, 2022

Happy Earth Day! I hope you take time to think about things we can ALL do to make our planet a better place to live! Let's get to what's new this week!

Disney Visa Cardmembers Can Save Up to 25% on Rooms at Select Disney Resort Hotels – And Join in the Celebration!

Disney Visa Cardmembers can enjoy special savings on stays for most nights at select Walt Disney World Resort hotels from August 28 through September 19, 2022.

This includes saving up to 30% on rooms at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and family suites at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, and saving up to 25% on rooms at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort and other select Disney Resort hotels.

This is a VERY small window - and honestly - I think this is how we will see Disney discounts going forward. So if you're thinking of traveling during this time, this is a GREAT deal! Here's ANOTHER trick - you only need to use the Disney Visa card for the deposit. ALSO: if you have a checking account at Chase, you can "convert" it to a Disney checking account (you'll even get a new Disney debit card) and take advantage of ALL the perks!

First Look at the New Grand Finale in the ‘Main Street Electrical Parade,’ Debuting April 22 at Disneyland Park

The return of the nighttime spectaculars at Disneyland Resort is just days away! The “Main Street Electrical Parade” and “Disneyland Forever” fireworks are returning to Disneyland park, and “World of Color” will be back for guests to enjoy at Disney California Adventure park beginning TONIGHT, Friday, April 22!

Two of the show directors for “Main Street Electrical Parade,” Jordan Peterson and Robin Trowbridge, are here to explain a bit more about the new finale, and an exciting first look!

Believe it or not, the “Main Street Electrical Parade” is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year! Generations of families have been delighting in this fan-favorite spectacular for five decades, and the enchantment will continue for a whole new generation of dreamers. It’s bound to be a magical homecoming!

In honor of the parade’s milestone anniversary, the “Main Street Electrical Parade” will return with an all-new, enchanted grand finale that celebrates the theme of togetherness. This universal theme is reflected in the creative concept of the new finale sequence.

Inspired by both the original design of classic “Main Street Electrical Parade” floats and Disney Legend Mary Blair’s iconic art style on “it’s a small world,” the new grand finale brings together more than a dozen Disney Animation and Pixar stories. These stories are interpreted in thousands of sparkling lights and electro-synthe-magnetic musical sound, with unique representations of beloved characters as animated dolls.

First Look: ‘Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!’ Opening Summer 2022

Climb aboard explorers and hold on tight, because it’s time to take a deep dive into the creation of the freshly reimagined show, “Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!” – opening this summer at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park!

Stepping inside the Theater in the Wild, Guests will catch up with the group of fish from Dr. P. Sherman’s office in “Finding Nemo,” who have made their way across the ocean to the Marine Life Institute. The fish tell Nemo’s story in this fully updated, 25-minute show, incorporating live performers and puppets, along with many of the beloved songs and production numbers from the original “Finding Nemo: The Musical.”

In addition to a new script, the show will feature new scenic set pieces and a new LED video wall designed to visually extend the world created by the physical sets on stage. We aren’t talking small set pieces either. Be on the lookout for a 32-foot-long sunken submarine and a fish tank volcano standing nearly 15 feet tall!

I know my kids will be THRILLED for this reimagined show! No official opening date has been announced but I'll keep you posted!

Greece Drops COVID Travel Restrictions Effective May 2

Don’t speak Greek? No need to freak!

Getting by in Greece is no problem for non-native speakers: roughly half the population speaks English, and anyone under about 45 years of age should be conversational (as English education became standard for school-aged children back in the ’80s).

That said, it’s always wise, culturally and respectful — not to mention super fun — to learn a handful of useful phrases (such as those broken down into travel-appropriate categories below) before you go, to better immerse yourself in the language and culture when you travel to Greece.

There's a variety of ways to greet friends and strangers in Greece, some more casual than others. Here's a good start:

Giásas / Giásou / Geia

“Hello/Goodbye/Hi”

Yah! / Yah-soos!

“Hi! / Hi y’all!"

Hárika polí

“Nice to meet you”

Na se kala

“Be well”

Kaliméra / Kalispéra / Kaliníhta

“Good morning”/“Good afternoon/evening”/“Goodnight”

Milás angliká?

“Do you speak English?”

The Greeks are infinitely proud of their culture and appreciate it when visitors make an effort to learn their language. So by memorizing a few key pleasantries, you’ll be nurturing goodwill between cultures, improving your travel experience — and best of all, keeping a little Greek in your heart when you leave. Until then: Antio sas! (“Good-bye!")

Thanks for reading! Next week I'll be highlighting a NEW resort near Playa del Carmen: Secrets Moxche Resort & Spa! This adults-only resort looks AMAZING and I'll be there in May!
